Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Erectile Dysfunction male

Erectile dysfunction (ED) means finding it hard to get or keep an erection. It is very common, and it happens to most men at some point. Sometimes the cause is physical, but very often the mind plays a big part.

An erection depends on you feeling relaxed. When you feel worried or stressed, your body switches into a "fight-or-flight" state that reduces blood flow to the penis. This is why anxiety alone can stop an erection, even in a man who is perfectly healthy.

One clue that the cause is psychological is the pattern. If you can get an erection on your own or on waking, but not with a partner, the problem is usually in the mind rather than the body.

The biggest factor is worry about performance. Often a single off night, perhaps after too much alcohol, tiredness, or stress, leads to worry the next time. That worry then makes it happen again, and a cycle begins.

Other common causes include feeling low or depressed, everyday stress, problems or tension in a relationship, low confidence, and unrealistic expectations, sometimes from watching too much pornography.

These problems respond well to therapy by:

  • Understanding the worry. A therapist helps you notice and change the anxious thoughts that get in the way.

  • Taking the pressure off. Simple step-by-step touch exercises let couples enjoy closeness without the pressure of sex, which breaks the cycle of worry.

  • Staying in the moment. Learning to focus on how things feel, rather than watching and judging yourself, helps arousal return naturally.

  • Working as a couple. When relationship issues are involved, talking things through together often makes a real difference.

These approaches work well on their own, and can also be used alongside medication to help rebuild confidence.

Because ED can sometimes be an early sign of a health problem such as heart disease, it is always worth checking your physical health too.

If this sounds familiar, a private, confidential first appointment can help find the cause and the right treatment for you.
