Delayed Ejaculation (DE)

Delayed ejaculation (DE) means taking a very long time to ejaculate, or not being able to at all, even when the erection is firm and there is plenty of arousal and stimulation.

Some men can only ejaculate on their own but not with a partner, while others cannot reach orgasm at all. It is less talked about than other sexual difficulties, but it is more common than many people realise, and it can be frustrating for both partners.

For many men, the cause is more emotional than physical. Feeling anxious, distracted, or under pressure can make it hard for the body to "let go," which is exactly what ejaculation needs. Worrying about how long it is taking often makes the problem worse, creating a cycle where the pressure itself gets in the way.

Physical causes can play a part too, such as certain medications (especially some antidepressants), nerve problems, or hormone changes, so these are always worth checking.

Common emotional causes include anxiety, stress, feeling low, and pressure to "perform." Habits can matter too. For example, a particular masturbation style or pace that is very different from sex with a partner can make partnered sex harder to respond to. Relationship worries, guilt, or a lack of feeling relaxed and connected can also play a part.

Delayed ejaculation responds well to treatment, and improvement is very possible by:

  • Taking the pressure off. Step-by-step exercises help you focus on enjoyment rather than the goal of ejaculating, which eases the pressure that gets in the way.

  • Adjusting habits. A therapist can help you gently bring your arousal during sex closer to what your body is used to.

  • Understanding the worry. Talking through anxious or distracting thoughts helps you relax and stay present.

  • Working as a couple. Talking openly together eases tension and helps you both feel more connected.

Where medication or a health issue is involved, your doctor can review this alongside therapy.

Because DE can sometimes be linked to medication or a health problem, it is always worth checking your general health too.

If this sounds familiar, a private, confidential first appointment can help find the cause and the right treatment for you.
